The 2021 IFFR will open on the 1st of February with Anders Thomas Jensen’s Riders of Justice: a Danish/Swedish thriller mixing dark humour and action.
Markus (Mads Mikkelsen) has to go home to his teenage daughter, Mathilde (Andrea Heick Gadeberg), when his wife dies in a tragic train accident. It seems like an accident until a mathematics geek (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), who was also a fellow passenger on the train, and his two colleagues show up (Lars Brygmann and Nicolas Bro).
“In a year like no other (…) there has been no shortage of great films looking for a home at IFFR".
During the IFFR press conference on last week, the festival director Vanja Kaludjercic announced : “This edition's revised Tiger Competition and Big Screen Competition, as well as the Ammodo Tiger Short Competition, encapsulate IFFR's spirit as a platform for the discovery of visions that pique our curiosity and capture our imagination.”
Tiger Competition is the festival's platform for discovering, raising the profile of and rewarding up-and-coming international film talent. Most of the 16 filmmakers in competition are making their debut in Rotterdam. Three directors who previously shown their short films at IFFR will present their first feature movies as part of the Tiger Competition.
Big Screen Competition is a diverse competition bridging the gap between popular, classic and art house cinema with this year's Rotterdam Film Fest seeing the selection of 15 titles.
22 short films have been selected for the Ammodo Tiger Short Competition, including 10 world premieres, eight international premieres and two European premieres.
Vanja Kaludjercic also unveiled a selection of 13 Limelight avant-premieres and cinematic hightlights that will feature next to the competitions, constituting the film line-up for February.
