Sarah Gavron’s Rocks, Remi Weekes’ His House and Florian Zeller's The Father were the leaders at the 2021 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) with five, four and three awards respectively. The ceremony was hosted virtually by actor Tom Felton (Harry Potter series, Risen, Braking for Whales...) live from Wales, where he is filming Save the Cinema by Sara Sugarman.
Founded in 1998 by Elliot Grove and Suzanne Ballantyne (who also created the Raindance Film Festival), The British Independent Film Awards highlight and reward the best, innovative and creative filmmaking and filmmakers in the United Kingdom. They encourage emerging talent and promote British film to the public.
The winners in most categories are elected by independent juries (leading professionals and talents from the British film industry), newly appointed each year and uninvolved in the nominations process. The winners for Best British Independent Film, Best International Independent Film, The Raindance Discovery Award, Best British Short Film and the nine craft categories are decided by a confidential vote amongst all BIFA voters.
