A selection, whether it’s Cannes, Venice, Locarno or Toronto, is meaningful to many filmmakers. Without a physical edition but with a label for the selected films, the Cannes Film Festival wants to give them opportunities. That’s how many artists can bring attention to their work. Generally speaking, for most festivals, it is only now that they are cancelled that the organizers understand the contribution of their physical edition.
The Official Selection
Most of professionals say they are delighted with the Cannes selection. Indeed, they hope it will help to boost cinema attendance as well as films notoriety. Those will be accompanied throughout their career and will be able to participate in other festivals. Among the big names Cannes represent, we can find Wes Anderson, Steve McQueen and Kate Winslet. La Semaine de la Critique
Despite the cancellation of the Cannes Film Festival due to Covid-19, the 15 selected works will represent this parallel selection devoted to first and second films. It was not an easy choice for many sales agent to accept that label. As Charle Tesson, Critic's Week Delegate General, said to Cineuropa earlier this week, "We gave them time, from the end of April to the end of May. They were undecided; initially, some of them wanted to postpone until 2021, then they said that there would be a backlog and that they’d rather take up the offer of a Label." And added : "we’re not entirely sure about the conditions which Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian will unspool within. Because what sales agents really want in a big festival is the presence of the international press, the presence of buyers and the presence of programmers from other festivals."
ACID
The ACID (Association du Cinéma Indépendant pour sa diffusion) announced its selection just a few hours after Critics' Week, last Thursday, June 4. The youngest of the parallel selections of the Cannes Film Festival will also organise its 28th edition through a label. The first public screenings of the films will take place from Friday 25 to Tuesday 29 September at Le Louxor in Paris, then at the beginning of October at Comoedia in Lyon and at Gyptis and La Baleine in Marseille.
La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs
While La Semaine de la Critique and Acid have announced their selections - films from those parallel sections will proudly bear the Cannes 2020 label, together with the 56 features of The Official Selection - the third parallel section of the film festival, La Quinzaine des réalisateurs, has decided not to give a selection for this atypical 73rd edition. It's clear that this section, as every year, was eagerly awaited, but Paolo Moretti announced to Le Monde that he would not be presenting a selection of works this year. As he explains to the french newspaper: "Making an official announcement seemed incompatible with most of the films we were discussing, as a significant number of them chose to wait until 2021 or to refer to the next festivals: Venice, San Sebastian or Toronto". But he precises also that "We have drawn up a confidential short list of a few dozen films (out of a total of around 1,600 feature films viewed), and have informed their authors of the interest La Quinzaine has in their work," he explains, citing the particular context of 2020.
